SPECIAL EMERGENCY APPEAL TO FEED THE HUNGRY IN KONTUM – PHASE 1 May 2020 – REPORT
Why the need to feed the Hungry in Kontum and Gia Lai? In fact, the hungry situation is regular in those provinces among the montagnards, every year, as on average the montagnards families can get rice only 3 – 4 months of the year. It means that for the remaining time of the year (8 – 9 months), they are obliged to survive with manioc and sugar potatoes, bamboos, wild vegetables, dry woods from the forest to exchange with the “Kinh” (Vietnamese) !!! but the situation is so serious this year due to the dry season that lasts in irregular way and to the Covid-19 government measures.
Here are a few pictures of montagnards families in their daily life….. to get an idea on how they are suffering, what we can see everywhere when visiting remote villages.
Only 1 – 2 times per year the children can enjoy together a real meal like this one organized by the priest of parishes or by the sisters when they manage to get support from various sources, locally or from abroad….

Dear Mr Hien,
I’d like to share with you few pictures and the list of “emergency hungry” families that have received the emergency packages, in cooperation with the sisters and collaborators of my parish Plei Kobei in the context of the project and programme.
Thầy gợi ý là 200 phần quà gồm 15kg gạo và nhu yếu phẩm, nhưng con thấy nhiều quá, hơn nữa để chia sẻ được cho nhiều người hơn, nên con mạm phép tăng số người nhận quà lên 250 người và giảm số gạo xuống còn 10kg.
You have suggested to give my parish total of 200 packages including 15 kg of rice and other daily needs for meals, but I find this too much. Moreover, in order to share to more beneficiaries, I’d like to increase the number of beneficiaries up to 250 families while reducing the volume of rice to 10kg instead of 15 kg.

Giáo xứ Kon H’ring có dân số công giáo khoảng trên 10.000 giáo dân phần lớn thuộc dân tộc Sêđăng. Phần lớn họ là những người nghèo. Trong những tháng này, đó là mùa giáp hạt và rất nhiều người bị đói.
Kon Horing is a large parish with more than 10,000 believers of which most are of Sedang Minority Ethnic Tribe. During these months, several families and people of the area are seriously suffering from the hungry situation due to the dry – rainy season period.
Con đã nhận được 54.600.000 VNĐ. Con đã mua 220 phần quà mỗi phần 250.000VNĐ để gửi tặng những hộ nghèo nhất ở trong 15 làng thuộc giáo xứ Kon H’ring. Tổng số tiền quà là khoảng 55.000.000VNĐ.
I’ve received the sum of 54,600,000 VND and prepared 220 packages/gifts with the cost of 250,000 VND/each in order to support to the poorest of the poor of the 15 villages belonging to Kon Horing parish. Total value of the gifts is 55,000,000 VND.

Vừa qua anh đã gởi cho em 55 triệu + 1 triệu để giúp người nghèo vùng De Tul (ya Gong 52hộ), De Sơ Mei + Pran (cha Hùng dòng Ngôi Lời 68 hộ) và Plei Tơwer (cha Binh 60 hộ) Số tiền trên em đã mua 180 phần quà cho 180 hộ nghèo và neo đơn, mỗi phần quà gồm có: 10kg gạo, 1 lít nước mắm ngon, 1 lít dầu ăn, 1 chai xì dầu, 1kg đường, bột nêm và bột ngọt và 1 thùng mì tôm 36 gói.

In the context of this support to the poor project, you have sent me 56 millions of VND to help the poor in the area of De Tul (Sister Gong with 52 families), De Sơ Mei – Pran (Father Hung of Ngoi Loi Catholic Congregation with 68 families) and Plei Tower (Father Binh with 60 families). With the above funding support, I have prepared 180 packages to give to 180 poorest families; each package includes 10 kg of rice, 1 liter of fish sauce, 1 liter of soja cooking oil, 1 bottle of soja sauce, 1kg of sugar, 1 pack of glutamate monosodium and 1 carton of instant noodles of 36 packs.
Về phần em, em phụ thêm mỗi phần quà 1 cục xà phòng thơm, 1 túi kẹo cho trẻ con, rau củ quả ai cần thì lấy. Riêng chỗ Ya Gong thì mỗi người có mặt già trẻ lớn bé tất tần tật đều được 2 bánh mì mặn/ ngọt để ăn trưa.
On my side, I have given in supplement 1 bath soap; I pack of sweets for the children, and various vegetables depending on the need. In particular for the people of Sister Gong, all of people who are present there have received 2 sweet and salted breads for the lunch.

Thêm một hộ chiếu rách nữa đây. Hộ này cách hộ hình trước một ngôi nhà. Nhìn món quà mới nhận về mà cầm lòng không nổi. Chai nước mắm, chai dầu và mì tôm đã chia sẻ cho bố một ít rồi. Mỗi ngày chỉ có một bữa cơm mà thôi. Hôm nay nhận quà nên mẹ và 3 con ở nhà, bố đi làm trên rẫy chiều mới về. 2 hộ này ở Bok Rei cách De Tul khoảng 15km.
One more poorest family… This one is next to the one I mentioned. What happiness they have when receiving the gift!!!! They have cried! The fish sauce bottle, the cooking oil, instant noodles have been partially shared to their Dad. The families have only 1 meal per day. Today is one of their happiest day and all the members of the family are staying home. The Dad will be back home from work by the day end. Those 2 families are located at Bok Rei, 15 km far from De Tul.
